Intro to Falconry in the Cape Winelands
The sport of falconry is an ancient pastime, practiced for centuries by the nobles who frequented this unusual sport. You will be taught the history of this ancient art, and the various methods that are employed when one begins to train others to handle these birds of prey. You then meet at the rehabilitation centre as you learn about the many various flight patterns and hunting techniques employed by the raptors. Next up, the real thrill begins as your bird flies off your hand as it swoops after its prey. You will also have the opportunity to have a Harris hawk fly to your very own glove!

A full day of falconry
Much like the introduction to falconry, you will first learn of this ancient and noble sport; this includes the history and the many training methods used to correctly handle these birds. You will then learn how to use the falconer’s equipment. Learn a few helpful tips and hints on how to handle your bird and enjoy the opportunity to handle the fearsome Harris hawk. Lunch is served later on as you view the rehabilitation centre, learning through the centre’s interactive shows. After this, you will venture back to the field to watch these awesome birds of prey in action. Don’t forget your camera.

A private viewing of birds
For the large group or family looking for a different experience - a private viewing of birds will be the ideal situation for you; there is a massive selection of eagles, kites, falcons, owls, buzzards and hawks on display and they will be flown around their section and to you as well. This is a truly interactive exhibit and a personal encounter with these birds. This informative show encourages the conservation and awareness side of these protected species. In a final test of grace and strength, one of the larger birds is flown towards the group and we highly recommend that your cameras remain ready for this photo opportunity.
