Looking for a fun night out? Be prepared for an evening of fun, laughter with a bit of learning thrown in!

We were warmly welcomed with a refreshing glass chilled of wine or juice – on the hot balmy night, it was just what we needed!

It was actually quite daunting walking into the professional kitchen for the first time. There was lots of shiny stainless steel benches, gas burners and a whole host of culinary equipment that we were not so sure about! Also a hastiness of chefs in the corner!

Chef Aviv soon put us at ease as the menu for the evening was explained to us. We were to be treated to a refreshing take on a traditional Cape Malay feast. Then we learned we would be responsible for different elements of each course and the plating of the food! After an entertaining demonstration by Chef Aviv and his team, it was time to be divided into our three groups – one for starters, one for mains and one for desserts. Each group was also allocated a team of student chefs that were able to help us and assist where needed!

Now it was time to don our aprons and chef hats! The group I was in was responsible for the starters which included folding and frying the delicious bobotie samosas and frying the raitas – almost like a large chilli bite! The time flew as we were folding and frying! All too soon we had plated our creations and were taking it through to the dining room to be enjoyed by the other teams for the evening.

The team for the mains then disappeared back into the kitchen to put their finishing touches on their dishes – a flavourful chicken curry with coconut rice with relishes. Soon it was time for the dessert group – they wowed us with a scrumptious malva pudding, with meringue shards, which was balanced wonderfully by a refreshing granita – a firm favourite by all at the dining table!

Be warned though – the portions are man-sized! Come hungry! The evening was super entertaining and fun. We were given all the recipes that we so enjoyed during the evening to take and try out at home. The staff at the venue were so professional and friendly.

Would I recommend this experience? For sure!
